Perfect for scooping up your favorite curries or enjoying as a delicious side, this recipe is surprisingly simple and requires only a few basic ingredients.
Prep Time: 20 minutes (plus rising time) Cook Time: 2-3 minutes per naan Yields: 8 naan
Ingredients: For the dough
- Plain Flour – 500g
- Dry Yeast – 02 tsp
- Plain Yoghurt – 02 tbsp
- Salt – 01 tsp
- Sugar – 01 tsp
- Warm Water – 60ml
- Warm Milk – 150ml
- Oil
Ingredients: For the spread
- Softened Butter – 04 tbsp
- Minced Garlic – 02 tsp
- Chopped Coriander Leaves
How to cook:
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Mix well and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy. This indicates the yeast is active.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
- Add the foamy yeast mixture to the flour mixture. Then, add milk and yogurt.
- Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can use a stand mixer with a dough hook or knead by hand. The dough doesn’t need extensive kneading, just until it’s soft and not sticky.
- Lightly oil a bowl, place the dough in it, and coat the top with oil. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size. Rising time may vary depending on the temperature.
- Once the dough has doubled, divide it into 8 equal-sized balls (approximately 100 grams each for medium-sized naan).
- Place the dough balls on a lightly oiled tray, brush them with oil, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- While the dough is rising, prepare the garlic butter. In a small bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic, and chopped coriander leaves. Mix well.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out each dough ball into an oval shape (or any shape you prefer).
- Spread the garlic butter mixture generously over the shaped naan.
- Heat a flat pan (tawa or skillet) over medium heat. Sprinkle a little water on the pan. Carefully place the naan on the hot pan, buttered side up.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes, until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip the naan and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until golden brown.
- Once cooked, spread more garlic butter on top for extra flavor and softness.
- Serve the warm Garlic Butter Naan immediately with your favorite curry or enjoy it as a delicious side.
Tips & Variations:
- For extra flavor, you can add finely chopped green chilies or other herbs to the garlic butter.
- Use whole wheat flour for a healthier option.
- Store leftover naan in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days or in the refrigerator for up to a week. Reheat gently before serving.
